Inventé en 1978 par la compagnie Japonaise JVC, le VHD (Video High Density) était un format vidéo spécial distribué au Japon jusqu'à la fin des années 80. De meilleure qualité que la VHS ou le CED mais moins performant que le laserdisc, ce n’est pas un laser qui lisait le disque VHD (25cm de diamètre) mais un saphir, comme les disques vinyles. Pour fonctionner, on introduisait la coque plastique ressemblant à une disquette géante ( 34x27x0,8cm ) dans une platine dédiée qui se chargeait d’extraire le disque de son enveloppe, de faire ressortir la coque puis de lire le disque (et inversement quand il fallait le retourner).

Voici vendu ici au format VHD un documentaire datant de 1985 etraçant la création, les coulisses de l'enregistrement et l'impact de la chanson We Are The World, co-écrite par Michael Jackson, enregistrée dans la nuit du 28 janvier 1985 par 45 des plus grands noms de la Pop américaine au profit des millions de malheureux d’Afrique (USA for Africa). The Video High Density (VHD) was an analog videodisc format developed by JVC in 1978 and marketed predominantly in Japan until the end of the 80s. A disc (25cm = 9.8" format) was stored inside a caddy ( 34x27x0.8cm=13.4"x1 0 .6"x0.3") , from which the player extracted it when it was loaded. Video and audio could be played back on a TV using a diamond stylus, similar to phonograph records, the stylus following the tracks electronically, like a compact disc.The quality was superior to VHS or CED but inferior to laserdisc. The format was discontinued in the 90s. Around 200 titles were released.
