ANTIQUE FRENCH CHRISTENING / SPECIAL-OCCASION BABY GOWN
Late Victorian to Edwardian, circa 1890 to 1910
A beautiful antique French baby's gown in fine white cotton batiste, richly decorated with fine ruffle work, pintucks and braided insertion. Suited to a christening or any special occasion.
The wide, off-the-shoulder neckline is edged with a delicate gathered frill, and the front bodice fastens with two small mother-of-pearl buttons. The short puff sleeves are trimmed with ruffled frills. A striking central panel runs from bodice to hem, densely worked with rows of fine pleated ruffles and braided soutache-style insertion - the kind of patient, labour-intensive needlework that defined a French layette of this era. The gown ties at the back with a self-fabric sash, and the full gathered skirt falls to a long, graceful hem.
Given the small bodice and long skirt, this gown would best suit a newborn to approximately 6 months, worn as a traditional long christening gown that drapes below the feet. Antique sizing runs small and varies, so please treat this as an approximate guide and refer to the measurements below.
A charming example of French layette workmanship. Ideal for collectors of antique textiles, christening gowns and baby wear, and equally suited to display, large / reborn dolls, or styling and photography props.
